3Okay for a tiny garden  Apr 18, 2009
By MeJam "Mel"
My husband and I searched everywhere for a small rear tine tiller that I could handle better than the "huge" one we had. After researching and listening to salesmen, we chose this one. (He was very skeptical because he thinks bigger is better.) Anyway, after the garden dried out from the rains, he tried out the new Bronco. He complained to me that he had to push it through the garden. I just thought he was saying that because he wanted a larger one. (Keep in mind, our garden has been worked about 10 years and is now a mixture of lots of clay, and little topsoil, so it is still "thick" and hard.) I finally got to try the tiller out, and on the first pass, through the edge of the garden that had not been tilled as much, it went great. Once I got into the garden that had been worked over the previous years, I had to push the tiller. I also had to lift it up to keep it from getting stuck in the dirt. It would till down, but the tires are not big enough to pull it. Guess where it is now? Back at Lowe's. They were great holding to their guarantee that if it wasn't what we expected, we could return in within a certain time period. Now, we are on for a tiller with larger tires.
Faults for a female user: hard to transport unless you park it right next to where you use it, also have to move the tires to make them either pull when cranked only or move them again so you can push the tiller when it is not cranked, have to push it through a well "seasoned" garden and it is hard to do that, also have to hold up the handle to keep the tines from getting stuck
Pluses: cranks easy, fairly light-weight (but cannot use it one handed like on the commercials)

5WOW!!!!!!!  Mar 19, 2009
By Jenny G. "Jenny G."
I am so happy with this purchase. It's my first tiller so I really wasn't sure what to expect. I watch my strong brother-in-law struggle with his front tine tiller every year and thought I would face the same. Even though I've read that rear tine tillers are easier to handle, I thought I would still have a hard time because I'm a 44 year old woman with pitiful upper body strength:)....Well I was wrong....It came assembled. I added gas and it started on the first pull. It plowed through that clay, rocky dirt like it was dry sand. It also cut up the dry weeds and brush (that I neglected to clear last year)and mixed it in the soil as it spit apple size rock out the side.

4Good Tiller but has limited abilities  Jul 13, 2009
By Frederick J. Ashby
This is a great tiller for my use which is tilling between garden rows and around trees to eliminate weeds. I have tilled quite a bit of ground getting ready for tree planting.

The 1st thing I noticed is that you can't till at full depth on the first pass with this tiller. The tires don't have enough grip. 2-3" is tops. On the second pass you can get down to full depth. The engine has plenty of power and will work as well at idle speed as full speed - just a little slower. The tilling speed could be faster and combined with the 14" width, tilling a 20x20' piece of ground takes about 15 min.

It seems to be well built and I expect it to last for many years. One thing that could be stronger is the handle. It is very easy to manouver for a tiller, but the handle tends to flex when turning and has even bent a little in one direction or the other.

If you have a big garden and need to do a lot of tilling, I would recommend getting a bigger tiller with larger tines. I think Yard Machines makes one for about the same price that is bigger.

If you have a small garden or just need to till between rows, this is perfect and the engine, tines and transmission look like they will last quite a while.

1Terrible Product From a Lousy Manufacturer  Oct 11, 2011
By Cave Geek
My friend purchased a MTD Troy-Bilt Bronco CRT Model: 21D-64M1066 tiller new from the factor's web site. He received the tiller in excellent cosmetic condition. There was no damage to the box or the tiller. He filled the gas and oil according to instructions. Both the gas and oil were purchased the same day.
His first attempts to start the tiller failed. He read the owners manual and verified that he had done everything according to the manufacturers instructions. My friend grew up on a farm and is very experienced in the use, maintenance, and basic repair of farm and home garden equipment. After several minutes of playing with the choke he got the engine running. However, he was never able to get the engine to run stably at full throttle. His next step was to take it to a local small engine repair shop. (He would have preferred to fix this, but that would void the warranty.) The repair shop confirmed that the problem was carburetor. It was contaminated and needed to be replaced. I was there when he unboxed the tiller, got fresh gas in a clean plastic gas container and filled the tank. At no time did he do anything that could possibly have damaged the carburetor. The repair shop contacted Troy-Bilt to get the carburetor under the warranty and Troy-Bilt refused. The repair shop went ahead and ordered a new one. My friend called customer service to try and get the issue resolved. They refused to honor the warranty and gave the excuse that the engine must have been run with old gas and that damaged the carburetor. This was patently false and my friend told them so. He explained exactly what he had done to prep and start the engine. They still demanded that he must have damaged the engine. And in any case they were not going to cover the warranty. (Translation: Give us you money and shut up. If you get shafted, you should smile and say thank you.)

5gotta get the hang of it  Jul 02, 2011
By morris
At first I hated this machine. It was difficult to turn,or back up. It would get high centered and not move.It had to be pushed through already tilled ground. It was horrible. Then after a couple of tries, I realized that I was trying to operate it like a front tine tiller. I also realized that I was trying to till a kinda small (30' x 30') area that was fenced and not adjusting my operating method to the characteristics of the new machine. I also read that starting out with the tines set too deep along the first pass would cause problems. Well with a little practice I have learned to operate the machine using only one hand, and with the tines set at the deepest setting. It is a great little machine.
