Believe it or not, I looked at scores of clipboards. I didn't want a calculator, watch, or odomoter, nor a storage compartment, form feeder, or pen holder. Above all, I wanted a compact design.
For decades, I've used the classic design - brown pressboard with the arched silver clip at the top. That's fine for hanging on a nail, but the clip sticks 1-3" above the top and stands at least 1/2" wider than the rest of the clipboard, so doesn't fit nicely on shelf, in a bag, or even on a desk or lap.
So, here's a simple, frill-less clipboard - AND it's lightweight, with smart rubber corner grips for added friction on pages, a nice reinforced spring mechanism, and a raised point in front that acts both as the finger or thumb guide (to lift the clip) but is also the perfect size and location to slip on a pen, as if into a pocket.
And it's cheeeeeeeeeeeap.

My clip was a bit loose on one side, and papers are not as strongly held to to the clipboard as usual. Otherwise, the clipboard is great! Nice and thick durable, good writing surface, and great clip capacity. It comes with a little thing that comes out of the clip so you can hang the clipboard to a nail in the wall or something. Hopefully only my clipboard was the only one with a slightly loose (but totally usable clip)!

These are great. I found the little metal attachment at the top a bit annoying, so I just removed it. Also, I scratched the board while I was opening it, but that was my own fault. Just be a bit cautious while opening it.
These are perfect for what I use them for, walking around all day and taking notes.

I use this board on a nearly daily basis to sign documents for my clients. After two appointments it started to show permanent imprints of my previous signatures. I then noticed that ball-point pens tended to stick more when writing on thin paper. I'm switching back to my unsightly wooden board.
