Looks and works great - easy to read! Jun 24, 2010
By stealth916 This is an attractive outdoor thermometer that is easy to read from a distance. The face is not pure white but has an antique look that goes well with many outdoor themes.
At first I was concerned about the accuracy of this unit after reading other reviews. However I have found it to be very accurate.
The first thing you must know about this or any outdoor thermometer, is that it MUST not be placed in direct sunlight. You must place the thermometer in the shade. It is best if you can place it somewhere that is always in the shade throughout the day, such as under the cover of trees or an overhang.
In order to assure accuracy before you put this unit in service, you need to calibrate the dial to the markings on the face. Contrary to what other reviewers may have indicated, this thermometer CAN be adjusted.
Step 1: Leave the thermometer indoors for several hours, near a thermometer you trust - such as the thermometer that controls your home air conditioning. Wait at least three to four hours for the thermometer to stabilize to the indoor temperature.
Step 2: Now calibrate the dial to match the correct temperature on the dial face. This thermometer can completely turn within the main housing allowing you to adjust the hand until the temperature reads correctly on the dial face. It has ratchet stops on the main housing which allows a very precise adjustment. Simply grasp the back of the thermometer which protrudes from the back of the main dial, while holding the whole unit firmly. Now rotate the thermometer in the housing until the dial reads correctly according to your reference (indoor) thermometer.

The Description is Misleading Jul 16, 2010
By Anonymous The description for this product states that it has glass lens. This is the main reason why I bought this thermometer in addition to its look (which is nice and no birds/butterflies/deers are present). My previous one - the Springfield brand as well - had plastic lens that got cloudy and yellow over time. When I received this thermometer, I was surprised to see that it has plastic lens too! In the middle of the face there was a little scratch, only plastic can have this kind of scratches. What's more, the paper backing is visible from the back and if water gets in, we're done. I'm hesitant to place this product outdoors and returning it as soon as I can.

Good enough Mar 08, 2009
By Earl F. Gilbert This item is, by no means, state-of-the-art or top-of-the-line. But, like other household items today, you seem to have to choose either cheap or expensive; there is no mid-range. This product will suffice, since it was the best value and it seems to be somewhat accurate. But, why can't someone produce items that are durable, reliable and reasonably priced?

Item is not as described Feb 17, 2010
By RoadRunner Warning: the description says "glass lens prevents clouding". I purchased this product for that specific feature. The lens is plastic and WILL eventually cloud.
