Don't waste your time - buy another kind of outlet cover Jan 20, 2009
By B. Horowitz My wife and I read lots of online reviews of outlet covers, and these seemed to get the best reviews. So we purchased a pack, and began to install them.
We were very quickly disappointed. The plastic is so soft that the screws can pull through the cover, and the cover also flexes. The screws were so poorly made that the head snaps off (forcing us to replace the outlet as well). Both of these problems occurred when we tightened the screws only moderately. The only way that we could install these covers was to tighten the screws only slightly -- but this left the cover insecurely attached to the wall, so that it could easily be knocked off by an accidental bump.
The next morning I went to the hardware store and picked up similar outlet covers made by Cooper Wiring Devices. The plastic was hard enough that the screws didn't pull through and the cover didn't flex. The screws were well made, and went in perfectly and without fuss. The covers were about $3.50, they came in two colors (beige or white), and we didn't have to pay shipping.
I also picked up a tamper-proof outlet, which prevents insertion unless two prongs are inserted simultaneously, also made by Cooper.
Save yourself the trouble and aggravation, and purchase another product, one that works like it's supposed to.

Broken Design for Standard Oval Plugs WITH ONLY ONE CENTRAL SCREW Sep 05, 2010
By Nebraska Joe First let me say I'm not kidding, crazy, or exaggerating, and I honestly have no interest in any outlet cover company; I could care less other than my child being safe.
I completely agree with a previous reviewer that this outlet cover does not sit flush with wall IF YOUR OUTLET IS THE STANDARD OVAL SHAPED OUTLET WITH ONE CENTRAL SCREW (as opposed to two screws at top & bottom of cover). My outlets I believe are very very common --- those oval type plugs: flat on top and bottom of each plug with curved arc along right and left sides.
So when I took off the existing cover and pressed the Home Safety "Universal" Outlet Cover to the wall (without screw at first), it was not flush. Then, I tried screwing it in as tight as I could (I even thought I stripped the screw) and could not get the edges to sit flush against the wall AFTER AT LEAST 5 TRIES. Thus, the edges were quite loose (not just a little) with a 1 mm gap all the way around (a small spider could get through). I even tried modifying the design by cutting off the small plastic spacers on the back side of the cover, hoping they were the issue --- but no cigar.
After further analysis, I determined that the "cut-out" (recessed area) on the rear of the plate is too shallow. I kid you not.
I rarely review items, but this design appears so flawed that I had to speak up. I can never understand why something like this would get so many 4 and 5 stars ...
On a totally different topic --- I once made purchase decisions after reading/tabulating reviews. I'm not suggesting reviews are bogus for this product (I have no idea), as it probably works well for those who rate it high. Just as an aside, please google "how to tell fake reviews on Amazon or products". Bottom line -- decide for yourself.
Again, I have no interest in other companies, am not a former employee, etc. I first purchased two "Mommy's Helper" outlet covers which fit perfectly (rear cut out EXACTLY CONFORMS TO MY STANDARD OVAL TYPE OUTLET) and it's deeper ----- I then bought these which I assumed were the same product from the frontal appearance. But they are not. This outlet cover that I'm reviewing has a rectangular type cut out that is supposed to accomodate all types of outlets. Perhaps it works for the newer (rectangular) outlets but not mine. Our home was built around 1980.
I hope my investment of over 30 minutes on a Saturday night at least helps others. Try buying one first of each brand then seeing which one fits better.

Not recomended for single screw outlets Mar 06, 2009
By W. McEwen
"SKIPDADDIE"
I got one of these before buying them for the entire house and I am glad I did. My outlets have the single center screw. When you snuggly install the screw in the center it causes the outer edges of the covers to bow out and makes the cover feel loose. They won't fall off or expose children to the electrical hazards, but it is not the clean look and secure feeling I was hoping for. Like the title says, I do not recommend this product if you have the center screw outlets. It will probably be better if you have the double screw outlets.

A must have for babyproofing! May 31, 2009

I think I have tried almost every outlet safety product on the market and I love this one! No broken fingernails or misplaced plug-in protectors (which hurt pretty badly if you step on one in the middle of the night!). These outlet protectors are super easy to install, don't look hideous, are easy to use, AND they increase the energy efficiency of your home. There is a similar type of product that you rotate the plug like a key, rather than sliding it to the side, but they are much higher profile (stick out from the wall more). I have had these covers in my home for more than a year and have yet to have one break. I definitely recommend these to anyone with a child or one on the way!

Outlet Plate Covers, original by Kidco vs Cheapo by Safety First Sep 02, 2010
By Karen Grant-Tolman

The original ones made by Kidco were a 5* plus! They did the job, easy to use and install and no issues what so ever.
However no clue if Kidco sold off most of its stuff or what happend but now Safety First makes these and sadly they are classic Safety First quality, CRAP!
If you have the original ones by Kidco you are golden and that is a question to ask if purchasing second hand ones. If you have the new ones by Safety First, don't waste your time.
I hate when a great company takes a great product and sells off the rights to it to a trashy make money and screw quality place :(
How to tell the difference:
Kidco ones had one screw hole in the center. Safety first's have three spots for screws. Also if you have them in hand you can clearly tell by the quality and construction if you flip them over and look!
